Cheryl de Kauwe, Salsa Instructor

Cheryl De Kauwe Sydney Latin DanceCheryl de Kauwe comes from a very successful Ballroom & Latin American dancing family - with her mother, father, aunt & sister running successful dance schools in the Ballroom, Latin American, Jazz, R&B, Disco & Hip Hop genres with a collective resume of training, teaching, adjudicating/judging & performing in London, parts of Europe, Sri Lanka & Australia.

Cheryl has always been surrounded by music & dance and from the time she could barely walk & talk, recalls her mother teaching at their home in Sri Lanka. She has fond memories of doing homework to the beat of Latin American music in the back room of her parents’ dance studio in Sri Lanka. With this upbringing, she is more comfortable on a dance floor than any other place.

As a child, she took classes in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Ballroom & Latin American dance & as a teenager collaborated with her sister to perform R&B, Disco & Hip Hop with a dance troupe. Whilst still at school, at age 17, she taught at her father’s (Dr Vevil de Kauwe) International Dance Studio in Parramatta. In her adult years, she took classes in Contemporary Dance & Salsa. Whilst living in London in 1999, she fell in love with Salsa and took classes with Sai & Deanne (the 1996 UK Salsa dance champions) at the famous Pineapple Studios in Covent Garden.

Her parents have passed on to her their very strict dance training - focusing on technique & of course a love of dance. Although not applying the same strict rules, Cheryl’s teaching is technique based without compromising the pure form of “street style” Salsa.

Cheryl has taught at various Salsa schools in Sydney and continues to perform Salsa, Cha-Cha, Samba and other Latin dance styles. Her elegant teaching style, warm nature & patience ensures an enjoyable learning experience for all her students.

Juan Ruiz, Bachata Instructor

Juan Ruiz, Bachata Instructor Juan Ruiz is known as the “Father of Bachata” in Australia. He is one of the best known Bachata promoters in the world, and a pioneer of the Bachata Moderna style. Juan has taught and performed in Australia and all over the world.

Juan’s unique Bachata style is known as Bachata Moderna, which is based on the concept of the crosses and the flavour of Zouk, Kizomba, Tango, Hip Hop and R&B. He has an incredible talent of fusing the passion of these dance styles whilst remaining true to the Bachata form, maintaining the feeling & emotional elements that makes Bachata what it is.

In his efforts to promote Bachata to the next level, Juan came up with the idea to create a community website for all the Bachateros and Latin dancers in Australia, for which the community is very grateful. The website Bachateros.com.au has become a worldwide brand in the Latin industry, where various artists share their music, and many dancers can share their passion by way of articles and stories via the website.

Juan Ruiz is also one of the directors of the biggest Bachata festivals, the Sydney International Bachata Festival.
